The chocolate industry is one of the most exploitative industries in the world. Most of the world's cocoa is grown in Ghana and on the Ivory Coast, where children as young as 5 are forced to work in dangerous environments and some are even coerced to work without pay. Divine Chocolate is challenging this by growing its chocolate with the cooperation of the 85,000 farmers who co-own the company itself. By giving the farmers control over the company, Divine is able to ensure that its cocoa is grown fairly and workers are given safe conditions. Specifically, Divine supports women empowerment within the cocoa industry, where women are often denied income despite their important role in cocoa production. They offer women training programs, literacy, and support as leading members in the cocoa growing cooperative.
